On Thursday, May 8, the report "Rule the Adjustable" by Publieke Zaken ERS and Quo Mare was released. Author Hans van Cleef explains in the AD the impact of closing gas-fired power plants on the security of electricity supply: "Solar and wind energy are becoming increasingly important in the Netherlands, and are eventually going to provide 80 percent of electricity needs. That is good news, but there is also a problem: solar and wind are not controllable. Without wind and sun and with a high demand for energy, there are only three options: electricity imports, batteries and gas power plants."
The researchers advocate that gas power plants should not be shut down, but left on standby. The government should regulate that. Van Cleef: "And quickly, too. Because if a gas plant has to order a new turbine, you want certainty that the investment will come out. And besides, there is a delivery time of five years. If you don't regulate this until 2033, you're too late."
