PZ ERS in the news - Gunvor refinery shutdown ominous sign for rest of Europe

Production at Gunvor oil refinery, a small one in Rotterdam, is temporarily halted. The company will monitor the situation closely and assess a "future restocking of the refinery in due course. But the problems seem symptomatic of the broader refinery market. Hans van Cleef spoke to the FD about this.

The provisional closure of the Gunvor plant is a signal that refining is no longer a foregone conclusion here. Indeed, the conditions for the Netherlands to retain refineries are only getting worse. Refineries simply have high emissions. The tax is already leading to significantly higher costs for Dutch industry compared to their European competitors, and may increase further towards 2030. And the levy comes on top of the EU ETS price paid by European industry.
